‘So, Christine, we’ve been talking to Ronald.’

‘And?’ She looked puzzled, Crane decided. As if Ronald wasn’t even worth talking about, so why were we asking about him?

‘It seems to me that you thought you were better than him. Stronger, mentally and physically.’ Crane put the physical bit in to see if she’d bite.

‘Of course, I’m better than my husband. Well, let’s face it who wouldn’t be? Snivelling little idiot. That’s why I had to take control of everything. Our money, our relationship, the house, everything! He’d be nothing without me. I’ve told him that, of course. He saw it in the end. Even he isn’t that stupid. He soon learned not to object to my purchases for the house. I told him I had more design in my little finger than he had in his whole body. Also, he’s uncoordinated, doesn’t know how to dress properly and is hopeless at budgeting.’

Crane was taken aback. All in all, that was a very damning description of her husband.

‘It was a heavy burden sometimes I can tell you, but what can you do? He’s lucky to have me. And I’ve told him that as well.’

‘I see,’ said Crane.

Christine smiled. ‘Okay maybe that was a bit harsh. He wasn’t really that bad. If he had been, I wouldn’t have kept him. He was also easy to be around, people liked him and once he stopped criticising me, we rubbed along pretty well.’

‘Was that the same attitude you had towards your parents?’ Crane asked but thought he already knew the answer.

‘Well, yes, I suppose. They were stuck in a time warp. They never went out, didn’t have any friends, just kept themselves to themselves. So that meant there was no technology in the house. No internet. Basic television. No mobile phones. Honestly they were dinosaurs.’

‘You didn’t get on with them?’ said Anderson. More of a statement than a question.

‘What a strange question. They were alright, I suppose. We didn’t spend much time together, as frankly I had better things to do than listen to them rambling on. Once I moved out, I guess we got together on Christmas and birthdays but that’s about it. I was a bit pissed with them, to be honest.’

‘Why?’

‘Because of money. I’d been persuaded, against my better judgement I might add, to put money into a house they were purchasing some years ago. I’d received a small inheritance of £10,000 from my grandmother and they asked if they could borrow it to invest in the new house. It seemed important to them, so I went along with it. The idea was that when they sold that house in a few years, then I would get my £10,000 back with interest. I made sure about the interest bit.

‘But then when it came to it and they sold the London house at a huge profit, they refused to give me any money from the sale. They claimed they didn’t remember ever saying that I could have the money back with interest. And that anyway I’d inherit everything they had when they died.
